The NPI Manager leads our New Products Introduction efforts and collaborates cross-functionally with R&D, Marketing, and Manufacturing to support standard and custom solutions. The NPI Manager will manage special projects involving stringent requirements, customer interaction, and atypical applications.  This role also provides technical leadership to operations engineering and mentoring of production engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage products/programs from order receipt to completion.  This may include applications engineering with customer, product specification development, substrate selection and/or fabrication, filter design, test plan creation, etc. 
  • Lead new product developments. Works with sales and marketing to determine feasibility and estimate performance of customer requests. 
  • Monitor the deposition equipment market and scientific papers for innovations in filter technology, applications, and equipment.  
  • Collaborates with R&D to develop new materials, processes, and manufacturing equipment.
  • Support Team and Technology Advancement.  Refine existing and implement new designs for manufacturing principles. Work with a team of manufacturing engineers to improve factory flow for non-standard products. 
  • Mentor and train junior engineering staff.  Develop training and continuous learning tools to grow the team.
  • Overall ownership for all materials in support of early prototype builds, through product development, and into production.
  • Interpret product requirements and design and develop specification, assemblies, and products in compliance with applicable quality system procedures, industry and business standards. 
  • Collaborates closely with the Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Purchasing and Quality teams to drive production test yield improvements from initial product launch.
  • Manage multiple projects in parallel, with varying scope and timeline.
  • Presentation of designs to internal stakeholders and external clients.   
  • Additional duties as needed.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Physics with 10+ years’ experience. 
  • Extensive knowledge of thin film deposition processes and optical filter manufacturing.
  • Extensive and demonstrable experience with Design for Manufacturing principles.
  • Experience working in a fast paced, innovative, high-quality engineering and manufacturing environment. 
  • Strong foundation of interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written as well as listening.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Creative and flexible, yet a disciplined approach to process and engineering design.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a high degree of initiative and flexibility.
  • Strong work ethic displaying consistent dependability, reliability, and initiative.
  • Optilayer and TfCalc experience.
  • Excellent computer skills – Microsoft Office Suite (Word; Excel).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics or technical field. 
  • Project management experience. 
  • Proven management experience to lead team and drive requirements for new products.
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma, and/or Lean Manufacturing.
  • Knowledge and understanding of modern telecommunications and fiber optic transmission technologies.
  • Experience with the following types of products: EDFAs, Freespace optics, lasers, attenuators, OSAs, optical filters, passive optical components

Physical Requirements:

  • Work within a manufacturing and office environment.
  • Must be able to lift 35 lbs.
  • Clarity of vision to see near and mid-range. 
  • While performing duties of this job, this role will regularly be required to sit, stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms.
  • Temperature is moderate within work environment.
  • The noise level in the manufacturing environment is moderate, but occasionally can be loud.
